The U.S. Embassy is deeply saddened by the shocking violence in Charlottesville, Virginia on August 12, 2017 that left one person dead and 19 injured. Two members of the law enforcement community died while responding to the events. We offer sympathy to the victims and join leaders and powerful voices across our country in condemning the violence and hatred on display. We are proud that America is a nation of values, principles and laws. Those values include (but are not limited to) free speech, peaceful dissent, acceptance of diversity in its many forms and equal protection under the law. These core American values are, and will remain, the foundation for how we treat and communicate with each other and how we conduct diplomacy inside and outside of our embassy.
