U.S. Earthquake Engineer visits Tashkent

On August 18, Dr. Shakhzod Tahirov, a leading earthquake engineer with the University of California, Berkeley, delivered a public lecture at the U.S. Embassy on planning, designing, constructing, and managing earthquake-resistant structures and facilities.

In addition to his research, Dr. Tahirov discussed his field work conducting structural assessments of historical buildings in Uzbekistan.  After the lecture, Dr. Tahirov answered questions from a group of local journalists.  Uzbekistan, which is located in a zone of high seismic activity, has norms and regulations for construction that are largely based on standards developed during the Soviet Union.
