Self-Defense Classes for Women and Girls | Final Round 2021

Due to the overwhelming number of applicants for the final round of our Alumni Self-Defense project in 2021, we have closed registration. Please stay tuned for announcements about future rounds of the project.

Personal safety should be your right no matter where you are, whether you are in your home, workplace, or on the street. Unfortunately, the fact that one in three women and girls experience physical violence in their lifetime, most frequently by a person they know, is proof that this isn’t the case.

The problem is so widespread that, more likely than not, someone around you – a family member, neighbor, co-worker, friend, or even you yourself – has experienced this type of abuse. Unfortunately, harassment and stalking on the street is an everyday reality for women around the world.

To build the skills and confidence that women and girls need to protect themselves, U.S. Embassy Tashkent, in collaboration with professional Fudokan Karate-Do instructors – alumni of the U.S. Sports Exchanges Program – is launching the final round of self-defense camp for women and girls in Tashkent.

In a state-of-the-art gym facility provided through in-kind support from Makro Supermarkets, classes will run for three months beginning in November 2021. The exact start date will be communicated to all selected participants. There will be two age groups with a maximum of 30 participants each.

  • Group A: Girls ages 13-18; Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 15:00 to 16:00
  • Group B: Women ages 18 and up; Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 21:00 to 22:00

Participants will learn a set of techniques and exercises to defend themselves against physical threats, as well as maintain strength and overall wellbeing. The physical training program will be complemented by mental health coaching led by a professional psychologist – also a U.S. exchange alumna.

In addition to self-defense skills, participants will learn conflict resolution, open communication, and stress management techniques.

The classes are open to girls and women over 13 years old, regardless of fitness level or prior training experience.
