The United States Embassy is pleased to learn that former MP Murod Juraev has been freed after 21 years. Mr. Juraev, a human rights activist, had been one of Uzbekistan’s longest-serving prisoners. The Embassy regards Mr. Juraev’s release as a positive step and urges Uzbek authorities to build on it by making it a prelude to the release of other long-held journalists, activists and religious prisoners of conscience.
