Tashkent, Uzbekistan – November 28, 2023 – The United States Agency for International Development (USAID), in collaboration with Uzbekistan’s Ministry of Health, healthcare professionals, international donors, community leaders and medical representatives, is proud to announce the capstone event celebrating the achievements of its four-year Eliminating Tuberculosis in Central Asia (ETICA) activity in Uzbekistan.
The event provided a platform for learning about the innovative approaches, impactful interventions, and groundbreaking research that has contributed to the reduction of tuberculosis (TB) cases in Uzbekistan. Most notably, USAID ETICA enabled multidisciplinary teams to spread awareness about tuberculosis to 44,853 at-risk individuals, directly leading to 17,339 individuals referred to testing, of which 653 tested tuberculosis positive and started treatment. Additionally, USAID ETICA procured and provided medical equipment making rapid TB testing available to 9 million people in 50 districts of Uzbekistan. Attendees were inspired to continue working towards a TB-free Central Asia.
USAID Uzbekistan Deputy Mission Director, Edward Michalski expressed his enthusiasm for the event, stating, “Twenty years ago, it took several weeks to find out if someone was infected with TB. Now, thanks to USAID’s ETICA activity and other international efforts, results can be determined in hours allowing for faster treatment, reducing the spread of the disease and leading to a healthier population.”
