On June 9, 2017, representatives from the U.S. Embassy’s Export and Related Border Security Office (EXBS) and the United States Department of Energy’s National Nuclear Security Administration participated in a secure vehicle handover ceremony at Uzbekistan’s Institute of Nuclear Physics. The ceremony marked the transfer of a new, specialized cargo vehicle to facilitate safe and secure transport of radiological materials. The vehicle’s deployment is the result of yet another successful cooperative effort between the United States and Uzbekistan to reduce the risks posed by radiological and nuclear materials.
With the addition of this cargo vehicle, the national radioactive waste disposal facility has an increased capacity to further protect the people of Uzbekistan by employing a more secure means of transporting potentially hazardous material.
The U.S. Department of Energy and EXBS work with partners in the Republic of Uzbekistan such as the Radiation Safety Center to protect and remove vulnerable nuclear and radiological materials as part of a shared effort to eliminate threats posed by these potentially harmful materials.
